209 Primer Pocket Tolerance Problem?
« on: September 15, 2006, 11:16:43 AM »
went to the range today in an abortive attempt to check my BP Rifle Scope (the rifle is a Rossi 50 cal).
From the git-go noticed a LOT of smoke in the area under the barrel near the receiver face, (it's a "Break-Action type rifle).
After a 3rounds (swabbing between rounds with a dry patch) the gun failed-to-fire. Primer went off, but most of the flash escaped AROUND the primer.
Examination revealed the "flash-hole was plugged and the primer had backed out about 1/8". (Previous rounds resulted in the expended primer being tight, they required use of my "Primer Popper")
I attempted to remove breech-plug but couldn't with the factory supplied "T-wrench" due to interference with the scope.
(NEXT TIME I'LL HAVE A SOCKET WITH AN EXTENSION)
I'm a longtime BP shooter (40+ years), and due to following the normal cleanliness rules I've never had a Failure-to-fire.
I've noticed when I drop in a primer that the fit is loose, they expand upon firing and have to be "pryed" off. BUT the only tightness seems to be at the "flare" of the primer.
The remainder of the primer body is black with burnt powder residue (I'm using 777).
Anyone have a similar problem? Any ideas anyone? ???

My Tradition persut I can't use a Winchester  primer because they are too  long and I can't close my gun.
But the Remmenton Klean bore is perfect.  You might try the Winchester primer in your gun.
A longer primer might stop any powder from building up around the primer and keep the primer from moving back when fired .

Pretty simple ... change 209 primer manufacturers. There are around eight to chose from in area stores around me.

You failed to mention which one created your problem.

Let me guess...... Remingtons or Federals?

Actually Bill, I was using Winchester "for inline BP rifles".

I'm a poor guesser. :D

Try some CCI. Get the regulars ... not the CCI Mags. I don't recall those ever sticking. :)

If those fail to correct, then buy another breechplug - then reuse all your primers of both brands. Your flash hole on the present plug may be enlarging as it ages -- or it may be undersized to create a little back-pressure.

I dunno.... I'm just guessing and remember... I'm not good at guessing. ;D

FWIW, I used to have a Rossi 50 Cal and had the problem with "blow-back" around the primer and into the action.

The breechplug was pretty snug to tighten or remove, so what I did was backed the breechplug out a little at a time until the action would "just" close with a primer in it!

That ended the blow-back problems!

went to the range today and your fix worked beautifully, no residue on receiver face, or anywhere!!

Glad it worked for you!
The guy that bought mine still keeps his breech plug adjusted just like that!
