.357 Herrett for Elk
« on: September 15, 2006, 11:44:13 AM »
I've been hunting with a 30 Herrett for years for deer and just received a 357 Herrett Super 14 barrel from a friend, free. I want to hunt elk and thought that maybe a .358 rifle bullet in a 180gr would be better then a handgun bullets. I was thinking I'd try a Hornady 180gr Interlock or a Speer 180gr Flat Point but was wondering if 2000fps would expand the rifle bullets. What do you think? Should I try the 180gr or stick with the handgun bullets. Thanks, Don

I'd use a 200 grain cast bullet if it were me, that's the main bullet I used in my Herrett.

According to my Speer manual, the 180 grain FP runs in the 1950-2200 fps range in the .35 Rem, so I don't see why it would be a problem in the Herrett.

Then again, like GB suggested, cast is always worth looking into.

I took a Black Wildebeest with one using Hornady 158 gr. XTP bullets (hollow points).  I would have preferred a bit weightier bullet but that's what I had at hand and it worked OK.  Expansion was beautiful.
