Need advice on hunting optics

I'm going to begin my first deer season in hills and mountaiins of North Georgia.  I would probably try hunting with open sights but my eyes cant see the bulleyes or rings at the range like I could when I was 20 (aging eyes).
Anyways do most people hunt short distances (in mountainous terraine) using scopes?

Yep a small variable(1x3)or a 4X fixed sounds like what you need,It would help to know the gun your using.I personally like the 4X,but many will prefer the small variable.I would also make sure its a 40mm objective,on the fixed.

A variable with a low magnification on the low end is good as is a fixed 4x. You may want to consider a dot type sight too. They're light and quick.

I will be using a sks rifle in 7.62x39 (caliber equivalent to 30-30 winchester).

A good 1x4 or 1.5X5 or even a 2X7 Leupold scope works well in hills and mountains.  The good thing is, the light gathering ability a scope offers over no scope in low light conditions. In the woods the area gets darker faster than open area's.
