Hmm... a mortar that costs more than my car.  Think the wife would go for it?

You can get a Paulson Brothers repro Model 1861 8 inch seige mortar for $7500 and it includes the bed.  If you want a 10 inch mortar they are asking $10,500.  Think of the money you would save over buying the British mortar.  Eight inch shells only cost $160 each, and 10 inch shells are only $300 each.

And then you have to find some place to fire them without the TSA looking over your shoulder.

Good point E.D.  I had to buy a car when I got to RSA. That Mortar and my car have a lot in common. Both small and compact and from the Indian Subcontinent. My 2006 Korean Hyundai Atos was made in India. The mortar is $12,500 the car $10,250.

Gee I wonder if they would consider a trade.... ;D

Good perspective.  I've ALWAYS felt uncomfortable driving anything that cost more that what I shoot!   :D

But on the plus side of the mortar, it will appreciate in value better.

I am looking to possibly buy or make either an 8 or 10 inch 1861 style siege mortar someday. I know what Paulsons want for theirs as well as Hern Iron works. What is this mortar you are talking about? I can't seem to see or figure out what it is? When I click on the mortar link it goes nowhere?

It's a bronze British rear trunnion mortar of 8" bore that was in the possession of Nepal starting around 1820.  The Nepalese armory was cleaned out sometime in the last few years and mostly brought to the US for resale.  There is an article from the American Rifleman on their site at the bottom of this page.

I think the mortar is modelled on the British pattern only. Not cast in Britain & not an exact replication of their standard pattern. I'd suggest therefore that it was most likely cast in India at their works there. Adrian.

The British brass (bronze) 8 inch Land service mortar, in service from about 1750 - 1840 of 4 1/4 cwt & 2 feet 1 1/4 inch length, lobbed a 46 lb shell to a maximum 1600 yards. ref B.P. Hughes British Smooth-bore Artillery. The mortar depicted is of quite similar proportions. Adrian.
