45/70 Magnum Loads?
« on: September 16, 2006, 01:39:46 PM »
I know Buffalo Bore & other magnum manufacturers say their hot loads will safely shoot in encore but will it do any harm to the rifle?

No, it will not hurt your Encore. BB, Garrett & others design their loads for Marlin & H&R, neither is as strong as an Encore, so you have a margin of safety there. If you run across loads that are for a Ruger #1, that would be different.

nomosendero is right, you should not have a problem at all. I have shot hundreds of hot loaded 45-70's in my Encore with no problems at all.

Sorry to ask this, but are the loads in question safe in a Contender?

No, the Contender is in a bracket below the NEF & Marlin. Garret, for example sells a load that you can use in the Contender & some hotter ones that you cannot. This was the whole reason for the Encore's
existance, to handle cartridges or in the case of the 45-70, loads the Contender cannot handle.

Thank you for replys.  What made me ask is a suggestion from Ruger that I only use .357 mag. loads  when necessary & to otherwise practice with .38 spl. for long term use in my .357 mag. revolver.
