Need help with 15" 308 Encore
« on: September 17, 2006, 05:13:48 PM »
I have an Encore 308 pistol in 308 that I am having difficulty getting good groups from.  I have tried different types of 150gr bullets but am wondering if maybe a heavy weight bullet around 165 to 180 would be more stable in this short tube.  Any experience?

Not sure how they would work in your T/C, but I switched from 150's to 165gr. Sierra GameKings in my .30-06 and it made a world of difference.

"if maybe a heavy weight bullet around 165 to 180 "
165 up to 175 are not heavy for the 308 anything over 175  is a heavy bullet go the 308 winchester so the 180 is just on the heavy side. I use 168 gr Remington bulk bullets in both my savage 10fp-le-2 and 14.5" encore barrels and am getting very good results.

I am using the same data for the  military match loading  ;D  with IMR 4895 and national match brass

My 15" 7-08 Encore does very well with 139 Hornady Lite Mags, 1 1/4 100 yard groups.......

Thank you for the response.  I will get some 165 and 168gr and try those to see what happens.

I'm shooting 150gr Hornady SST out of my .308 over 45grs of Hogdon 4895 and Federal Match lg rifle primers.  This is the best combo for me after several powders, heads, and primers.

If all of your bullets you have tried to date are boatail bullets you may consider trying a flatbase.   If the crown is a little off, FB bullets usuallu are not as picky as BT's.
Trying differetn weights and sometimes brands can make a difference also.
I would encourage you to only change one component at a time so you will  know for sure what caused the change.

I'm shooting 150 gr. Nosler accubonds over47 grains of winchester 748. This has been the best load out of my 15" 308.
