What do you feel it's worth?
« on: September 18, 2006, 11:07:27 AM »
I have a chance to buy a model 760 rifle from a family friend; I want a good deal but I don't want to rip him off either. It is a 760, .30-06 caliber. It was made in December 1959 but it has the rear sight they went to in 1960 (barrel in NOT dovetailed). The blueing is really good and the wood shows minimal to normal wear for this vintage. It has a Weaver K-4 post reticle scope on flip mounts. Being a .30-06 I know it's not a collector's gun as it was their most popular caliber. It is not a high grade model rifle either; it's just a shooter's rifle.

I hunt deer with a 7600 .280 cut down to Carbine length with a Leupold Vari-X III 1.5 to 5X so I am looking at this for a back-up gun. My plan would be to eliminate the scope on it and replace the rear sight with a William's peep. I'll add sling swivels and it'll be ready to serve as my back-up gun/nasty weather gun.

My freind picked up a similar condition 760 .30-06 last year with the same scope, different mounts but with a peep and sling swivels already installed. His was an earlier model; around 1952. He paid $300 which is what I was thinking as being fair for the one I am looking at as well. The current owner doesn't hunt, doesn't shoot, doesn't even have a gun permit at the moment...

Any comments?

$300 - $350 is a fair price IMO.

$300 sounds fair. Maybe a bit more with the scope, and in real good to great shape.

Wish I had a truckload of em to sell to little hunter 12 there.

Look at gunbroker to get an idea of what they are selling for.

Just make sure everyone is happy with the deal. ;)

Sounds like your trying to do the right thing so what ever you come up with
should be fair to both parties.

Lil Hunter 12 - Remington made a little over 69,000 760's in .380 caliber from 1957 to 1980 (not including Carbine models) whereas they made almost 605,000 760's in .30-06 caliber from 1952 to 1980 (again not counting Carbines); Total rifle production for 760's was around 972,000. Based on those numbers, the .308 accounted for approximately 7% of the total 760 rifle production whereas the .30-06 accounted for around 62%. While I find it hard to believe that a 760 in .308 would be worth $1,200 (I don't mean that as an insult either, please don't take me wrong, it very well couuld be worth that much to certain people) it's an obvious fact that they made a lot fewer .308's than .30-06's and rarity always has an effect on value...

As a fan of the 760 I cannot help but pick them off the table at the gunshows.  Depending on the scope one with a few nicks is worth about $300.  A month before deer season it will go for more.  During the winter it will go for less.

DMF ... $300 is a fair price. Weaver scopes are not worth much these days.  NYH

PS  I have a 760 rifle in 300 Sav. for sale if anyone is interested.
