Was the Handi rifle ever chambered in 7x57? If so when was it chambered? I should remember but the old mind ain't workin.

It was, but I don't know when, I have a 7x64 Brenneke that was made in ~~2003~~2000 if that means anything. Maybe Kenbev knows, I think he has a complete rifle.

Thanks!! I don't know why I all of a sudden have an urge for one. The NO l Ruger and Encore are a couple options as well. Expensive though.

Yes, I have the complete NEF Handi Rifle in the 7X57. I bought it with help from a Pawn Shop in Alabama. It had a pallet wood stock when I got it but now it has a cinnimon laminate stock set. The serial number begins with NM. I believe this is the letter for 1998. I plan to put the barrel on another reciever and hunt whitetails with it this season. After I make a kill, it will go in the gun safe beside the 7X64 that I killed a buck with last year...

The 7X57 is the one sub .30 caliber deer rifle I'd like to own. I'd like to have a clean Chilean Mauser Carbine but the prices have gotten too high.

I snagged an SB2 Ultra in 7X57 on eBay a few months back and it shoots like a champ. I load 175 grain Remington PSP Core-Lokt bullets that are seated .020" off the lands. The 7X57 is my all-time favorite rifle caliber.

I hope the target photo displays; shot off a bench at 100 yards with makeshift sand bags. Seven shots in 5 minutes.

In the post above, I forgot to add that it is a 24-inch barrel; heavy, but not a bull barrel.

Has anyone else ever seen a 7x57mm Handi, besides these two existing guns. IIRC another member has one, but I don't know if he purchased it as a complete gun or as a barrel.

Anyone have an idea how many were made? I can't believe that they are rarer than hen's teeth.

I have one that I acquired since this thread was started(~6yrs ago!) minus the stock set, original frame and 24" factory barrel.

I have an original 7x57 barrel from the factory, more than likely one of the first out. I had been at the factory years ago getting some work done on a gun and spoke with them about two possibilities, a new ML offering and a 7x57 barrel. About a year or so later I got a call at home and was asked if I still wanted a 7x57 barrel, SURE says I. After some conversation I sent my receiver and 45-70 barrel to the factory, it was a '96 45-70 barrel and reciever and they wanted a '97 or newer to put the 7x57 on. They sent me a new receiver with both the 7x57 barrel and a shotgun barrel I ordered at the same time, a 12 gauge Turkey barrel. I think it was right around 1998 or so when I got the call and sent my rifle to them. Just a few weeks later all the barrels with the new(er) 1997 reciever was sent to me. I still have that receiver and those barrels and they are keepers....<><....

Both my 7x64 and 7x57 were made in 2000, had the white line spacer and schnable forend.

finally found tha pitcher of J2's "57"... today, its still tha same as you see it.
tha cin-lams were added later in life.
lost counta tha whitetail it took 14-15 years ago. he was sold on handi's with this'un...........

Yeah, I have one. S/N NM, 24" barrel measures 11/16" by my tape at the muzzle, guess that's a heavy one. Bought new, guess that would be '98 or shortly thereafter, just lately got it out to start working with it. I know it shoots quite acceptably, but don't have any targets to show yet. Goatwhiskers

Somewhere in one of my stashes of Treasures

I seem to recall a argenteen(sp) that has a 7x57 bbl on it. BUBBA got hold of the gun long before I did. I keep thinking will do something with it but just havant gotten around to it. The bbl has all the german proof marks and ETC... on it.

I saw that, I would love one, but that's a little too $eriou$ for me. Guess I'll have to hope that I get lucky and find one used somewhere, until then, I'll have to use the poor cousin (7-08), or get a .280Rem barrel.

The same guy trying to sell the 7x57 also has a factory 357max he's been trying to sell for a while.
I can't see anything a 7x57 will do that a 280 won't ... or a lot of 7mm-08 loads as well...

I too have complete factory 7x57 and 7x64.
Bought them both used but they were complete in the box guns.
Never checked to see when they were made.
Never did much with the 7x64 but so far the youngest son is 8 for 8 whitetails with the 7x57, all one shot kills out to about 270yds with factory Rem 140gr core-lokt ammo.

You could buy a 7-08 and down load it a little and you would have the same performance as a 7X57. Of course there is not the nostalgia there. It all depends on how much nostalgia means to you. Why have a 45 colt when you can have a 454. Why have a 45-70 when you can have a 450 Marlin?

It's not about downloading the 7-08 to 7x57 velocities. If you want/and reload; it's really easy to improve the performance of a 7x57, that's part of what's great shooting that caliber. Most 7x57 factory loadings are very mild, and still get the job done. The factory loadings are intentionally downloaded because of the "older" 7x57Mausers still in use.

If you want some thing hotter than the 7-08, then get a 280, no need to gnashing your teeth about not having a 7X57. Both the 7-08 and 280 are currently available. The 280 with a 26" barrel, if that is your thing.
