If it were me I'd pick a Bushnell Trophy, great glass at an affordable price. But a 3X9X40 is going to be set up for big game distances with a 100 yard parallax. You may want to ask yourself if you will routinely be shooting at those distances, or perhaps you may need a dedicated rimfire model, or one with an adjustible objective. All depens on you application for this rifle. Whether it's mosly a hunting rifle or a target rifle or just an all-around plinker for the back yard. If you want a dedicated rimfire model with a 50yd parallax, the Weaver 3X9 and 2X7 are excellent. As well as any of the Leupold rimfire models. If you want a dual purpose, squirrel rig/ target rig, I'd get a Bushnell Trophy 4X12AO or maybe even a Banner 4X12AO, and then you can shoot at any range whether it's sparrows and squirrels or bullseyes at 50 and 100yds. I just put a Trophy 6-18 on one of my .22s, and it's a perfect match for it's application, it'll drive tacks at 50yds, and keep them in the bullseye at 100 yds.
I'm sure there are other possibilities, just depends on your price range and application.
