Got charged by a Griz while stalking a Blackie!
« on: September 22, 2006, 07:28:09 AM »
Well I live in Alaska, and have hunted bear for about 5 years now. I have a 7'2" Blackie with a 19 15/16" skull and have taken a few 6' 6" blackie's. I've never taken a Griz because I haven't really felt like taking one yet! But Wednesday night I ended up taking one in Defense Of My life. Here's the story!

My Dad and Brother-in-law came into town to go moose hunting. We went out and spent several days in the bush not seeing any moose. We went to a nearby lodge on the way out and met Jeff Corwin form the TV show Jeff Corwin's Experience. Apparently he's doing a show in Alaska... Anyway we caught some lake trout, grayling, and shot some Spruce Hen's before returning home. Dad really wanted a moose so on the way home I brought him to my "Honey Hole" near the Alaska road system! We spotted a 50" bull and went after it but ran out of daylight.

The next day my brother-in-law says he wants a black bear rug for his house so we went to some nearby mountains to glass the berry patches! He spots a nice blackie within 20 minutes and we were off like a herd of turtles. When we reach the area we think the blackie is in we hear something in the alders heading toward us. All of a sudden I see a big brown head appear. Then she spots me lower's her head and charges from 20 yards. When she was 10 yards away I hit the Griz in the left eye. she roles and my Brother-in-law hits her in the side then I hit her in the shoulder as she flew by.

She went into the thick brush and stopped moving. So we waited about 20 minutes and approached from up mountain. I located her and pronounced her Dead! The mountain was so steep that we rolled her all the way to the bottom and cleaned her on the ground near the road. The only bad thing about this situation was they had recently closed brown bear hunting in the area so I had to call te Trooper's and hand over the hide and skull. She went an honest 8 1/2 foot and was missing all of her toes on her left front foot. She was a pretty old and cranky bear.

My first shot turned her skull into jello and probably killed her instantly my second shot broke her right leg. He got the guts.... I was shooting a Weatherby in .300 Wtby Mag with 200 gr. Nosler Partition hand loads. My Brother-in-law has the exact same set up!

All the way down the mountain he kept telling me that he was never gonna do anything this stupid again. But back in the truck it all changed to when can we go again. I guess I made another bear hunter!

45-70 I am very confident of myself and my ablities, this ain't my first Rodeo.... My Brother-in-law on the other hand told me he almost pee'd his pants! He is a police officer in Louisiana and his beat is in the worst part of town you can imagine. For him to say that it took 5 years off his life was kinda ironic as I don't know that I would want to walk the same streets he does!

I don't care who you are getting charged by a brownie is a very startling experience.  I got charged down on the russian a couple years ago.  Luckily she stopped short at about 10 yards and ran off.  Either way watching a bluff charge was a interesting experience.   They are FAST!!!!  I didn't even get a chance to get my pistol out of my hip holster.  I've since switched to a chest holster than is much easier to get to.    Congrats on your bear.  I hope to get a crack at a brownie before the end of the year too.

alaskacajun.

Been there done that too, but with Blackies. I ran a outfitting & guide service in the southwest for a few years and have seen my share of rodeos behind dogs. You never know what is going to happen. Seen some funny and some strange things happen. you take a mix of a scared bear a green hunter with gun in hand and half dozen braying hounds and add a couple horses and your bear decides to make a fight of it,,,, I will just let you figure what might happen next. Its just like playing poker, You hope for a flush then hope you don't have to flop with a pair of deuces. Have a good day..........Joe..........

Thebear 78 I tend to agree with your statement in general. But in this particular instance I was already in stalk mode and was closing the last few yards on the blackie that I could no longer see. When she appear I assumed at first it was the black, but when I saw her come out of the brush I already had the hammer aimed at her and was well prepared for the inevitable. So this time it didn't scare me but I probably would have had a stroke if I wasn't thinking bear at the time and got charged without my rifle handy.......  ;D

How often do guys get mauled up there? Never hear nothin down here in the lower 48.

A buddy of mine moved up there and told me to be on the look out for 12 ga one and a half ounce slugs for him which he wants when in "griz" country.

You didn't mention the claws as being mandatory to turn over or does the State consider them part of the hide too?

I've always wanted to make a bear claw chain necklace using just one claw. Attach a nice silver cap on the blunt end of the claw with a little ring for the chain to go through.

I do hang a couple of black bear clawsfrom my visor in the truck people comment on but a griz claw gotta be x3 bigger in size. You Alaska guys really are in God's country.

When shooting a Bear in Alaska in Defense of Life or Property, you are required by law to turn over the hide, skull, and claws... After dealing with the Trooper's, skinning the bear,  making a trip to Fish & Game, and turning over the hide to a Taxidermist I have to say I hope this is the last time I get charged in a closed area or without a tag. But I did get plenty of pictures!

Cajun,

You ought to see if you can find out when they auction the hide (en masse with others) and buy it.  Heck of a good story to go with the rug.

I plan on going to the Fur Auction, but bears this size usually sell for thousands of dollars more than I would pay for one! I'm 32, I have a feeling that I'll see another 9 foot class bear in my lifetime..... ;D   There's plenty of bears where that one came from!
