H&R Ultra Hunter .25-06 Question

I'm considering picking one of these up as my whitetail rifle next week.  Besides some basic accuracy things to make sure you get sub MOA at 100 yards, how do these rifles perform at longer distances?  There's a chance of up 300yardish shots where I hunt.  Trying to use search here, but can't find what I'm looking for.

Will the H&R be able to perform well at this range as well?

but if they can provide sub-MOA at 100yds, anything farther then that the rifle wouldn't play a part in its accuracy.  Atmosphere(wind, humidity, etc..) and cartridge (bullet, load) would be responsable.

From what I've read here on the 25-06 models, everyone but a few seem to be happy with their results.

There is no way even doing the basic accuracy things you can be sure of sub MOA with a Handi.  Most will, but some never will no matter what is done.  Buy it and try it out with some time to spare so you can fall back to plan B if things go wrong.  If you need a high probabilaty of an out of the box sub MOA rifle then buy a bolt gun.  Larry

My Ultra shoots a couple factory loads inside and inch with the first 2 rounds almost touching, , there are a bunch that have extremely good accuracy with them. I liked mine so much, I bought another Ultra, this is an older one that I bought from a fella who inherited it from his dad, he'd killed a lot of deer with it, so I expect it to shoot just as good. although it may become a .375-06 if I can convince myself I need it.....which isn't hard to do!!

I have a standard handi in 308 and a 300 yard shot is certainly with in my rifles capabilities and 300 yard shots are well with in the capability of the 25-06.  The problem with long shots is not so much the rifle but the shooter and the atmosphere.  The handi is harder to shoot well at longer ranges than some other action types, not to say that it won't shoot well it just takes more parctice and form is more critical.  The big problem with longer range shooting is that most people don't practice at longer ranges.  Most shooters can hit a deer sized target at 300 yards from the bench but when you throw in field postions and the rush of shooting at a real deer the equation changes.  The bottom line is that if you plan on shooting at 300 yards practice at 300 yards from a field position with the rifle you will be hunting with.  300 yard shots are much easier with my heavy barreled, bipod equipped, light trigger varmint rifle than they are with my handi rifle.  But for most of my deer hunting the handi is a much better choice than the varmint rifle, well because it is handy.

Thanks for all the help folks.  I'm confident with my shooting ability (although I always need more practice).  I just wanted to make sure that barring getting one of the very few inaccurate ones I've read about the rifle is capable of doing what I want.  Almost seems like it's too good to be true.  How cheap they are with their performance.

I'm thinking I will pick it up next week.  Should give me enough time to get comfortable with it before rifle season.  Worst case scenario it has to wait until next year.

I sold mine and wish I would have kept it. It would keep most factory loads in side an inch most of the time if I did my part. in fact my next 3 rifles will be .223 Ultra fluted, 25-06 ultra and a 45-70 for close in stuff. Enjoy. Jess

Oddly enough you don't need a sub moa gun to shoot a deer @ 300 yards a 2 moa gun will only use 6" of the 10" kill zone on whitetail that leaves 4" to cover field variances. Only the true lemons can't go into 2" @100 (not counting the pistol chamberings). MOA onlt really matters when the targets are small or really far away or both.

Yep, my Ultra 25-06 performs @ less then 1 MOA at all ranges.
