11-87sp?

I am thinking of getting a new shotgun this year, and am looking at an 11-87 with thumbhole stock, rifled slug barrel and cantilever scope mount. I want a semi-auto. I am currently shooting a mossberg 9200. I don't particularly like this gun. On sandbags it shot 3 feet to the left at 50 yards,using the two beads on the vent rib, so I had to scope it.(was wondering how I kept missing.) Anyway I want to replace it with the 11-87. Any trhoughts or suggestions?

Wow no replies at all! Come on guys I need advice, deer season is coming! Is this a decent shotgun or should I look for something else?

Have you ever hunted with a thumbhole stock? Or even toted one afield? If you ever do you will NOT want to do so again.

The Remington 11-87 is a super gun, I love them. I hate thumbhole stocks on anything other than a varmint or target rifle. Get one with a standard stock and you'll be happier.

Can you test-fire it before you buy it? Otherwise there's no sure way of knowing how accurate it will be. I think it will be a better choice than your Mooseberg  :P, but there is no real way of knowing for sure. Sometimes the ugliest gun can outshoot the best looking.

Sounds like a nice gun though so even if you can't test-fire it, just buy it and then if it turns out to be a dud, re-sell it.

Call me a wierdo but I hunt with a muzzleloader with a thumbhole stock and it shoulders completely naturally for me. To each his own I guess. Thanks for the responses, I need to get it soon so I have a chance to sight it in and practice with it before deer season.

I have an 11-87 special purpose and really like it.  I have both a 28 inch rem choke barrel and a 22" smoothbore rifle sighted barrel.  I have had no problems with the gun what so ever.  I have no experience with the fully rifled barrels but have heard good things about them.  I have never fooled with them because the rifle sighted barrel does everything I need it to do.  I personally don't like thumbhole stocks but I think that is a personal preference thing, you either love em or hate em, there isn't much middle ground.  The bottom line is the 11-87 platform will serve you well and if  you like the version you are looking at I imagine that you will be very pleased with the product.

I bought it Sat. haven't had a chance to pick it up yet. Archery season is here and I just don't seem to have an open spot yet. Maybe next weekend.  Thanks to all for the input.

Ive had an 11-87 sp 12 ga for many years, and it has been a dependable accurate firearm.  I shoot open sights, and have the rifled choke tube on it.  Out to 75 yards it is quite effective for deer, as it will shoot 3 inch groups with foster style slugs. 

If I needed to, I would buy it again.  I have the walnut, straight stock on it, I dont know much about thumbholes, but they sure look and feel nice.

Ditto on what KB said except mine has a red dot and synthetic stock.  It is a good stand gun but a little heavy to bust brush with.  No problems at all with gun.

I finally got to shoot it Sunday. took a couple of shots to sight her in but it cloverleafed slugs about three inches high at fifty yards. It was wierd though, it has a rifled barrel but it didn't like the sabot slugs, but loved the brenneke 1 1/4 ounce  slugs. I'm very happy with it so far.

Thanks to all who answered, i love the amount of knowledge and personal experience that's available on this site.
