I posted under rimfire as to ammo and as far as range goes for coyote I would probably limit my 22 mag. to say 100 yds. if expecting shots at longer ranges I would opt. for the 223 or larger 22 centerfire cartridge. :D   JIM

Which 22mag ammo???
« Reply #2 on: April 13, 2003, 11:35:13 AM »
This question gets asked offen here and that's great.  I personally have taken several coyotes with the 22mag and although it is not my first choice for yotes it will work in a pinch.  My favorite 22mag round for larger game is the 50gr HP by Federal. It shoots alittle flatter than a brick but it pack a wallop at the other end.  My longest yote kill with a 22mag is 125 yards using the Federal 50gr HP.  I hit this smallish female in the neck just at the the point where the neck meets the chest.  The slug took out the lungs and heart the dog never new what hit it, dropped on the spot.  I know that you are going to get all kinds of post saying that these coyotes and tuff animals and they are.  That you should uses nothing less than a 222 or 223.  Well I personally think that if you are targetting coyotes nothing less than a 22-250 is in order.  But on the other hand if a 22mag is all that you have then use it.  Just know what your and the rounds  limmitations are and don't exceed them.  If you think you can hit it at 100 yards, limit your shots to 80yards.  Always play it safe remember that pain is still pain, even if it is a miserable mutton eating, mellon stealing coyote.  You owe that much to the animal, if you cannot do it with one shot, then don't shoot. :(
So as to your question go heavy for Coyotes in the 22mag. :D

thanks for the replys. I agree with pain is still pain np matter what it may be and I plan on keeping my shots close. I have a cousion that kills deer with his 22 mag out to 150 yds and he says that he hasent lost one yet. I think the next time I viset him ill find out what he shoots, his gun is just like mine.

Tommyboy84:  Not doubting your cousin but over the years you will find lots of people that will never tell you about the ones that get away, or are lost and die a painful death.  The true mark of a man as a hunter is the man that knows his ability and the limits of his equipment, all equipment rifles that is can and will do a job but they all have their limit, and trying to make a clean kill on a deer out to 150 yards with a 22mag. is a streatch of the caliber and the hunters ability. :D   JIM

well at 100 yds I can put 3 shots in an area about the size of an silver doller. Not the best so im gonna try a differnt tipe the next time. Jhm I agree with, you I wouldent shoot a deer with a 22mag period no matter how close it was because I wouldent want to risk engery to the deer. But I have been with my cousion when he killed a 9 point buck with his mag at 120 yds. It droped in its tracks with a bullet hole between its eyes about an inch abouve them and a split skull in the back. It was impressive but I wouldent try it. by the way the game warden in over the area was with us.. and dident seem to mind.

CCI's 22 wmr. Maxi Mag TNT HPs seam to have real good expansion. At least they blow-up rabbits good enough. :blaster:

Shot placement is key..!!  I recommend the Remington V-max or the cci TNT hollow points. They have great expansion and travel faster than the 50gr ammo. All 22 mag ammo will kill a yote and I agree 100yds or less is best!
I have had the best results with the TNT, They really pack a wallop :D ..!!

The cci maxi mag plus v is a 33 grain bullet. For long range shots I would recommend ballistic tip 22 mags, they are as straight shootin as you get and they are HP for good expansion.
