G2 Handgun
« on: September 24, 2006, 01:11:36 PM »
Am I correct in the assumption that if I get a G2 handgun frame, all I have to do to make it a rifle is change the stocks, and longer barrel?

What are your opinions of the G2 in 44 Mag?  Am considering getting a handgun G2 in 44 Mag for hunting in Ohio during gun season.  It has to be a straight walled handgun caliber, 357 or larger.

For those that have this setup, how well do the Winchester factory loads work?  Thinking 240gr JSP.

If you have to go Straight Walled, you might want to consider a 375 Winchester. Yep, the carbine transformation is legal and all that's needed is a shoulder stock and a rifle barrel.

Thanks flash.

I THINK it has to be classed as a pistol round, but I don't think I want that much recoil, either way.

a .357 Max will fit the bill..as will 45 LC,41 MAG,44 MAG...And the 414 SuperMag and the 445 SuperMag are dandies too..

OK I guess after the deer season I'll have to get me a Contender Pistol and plan for the future hunts.

I would go for a 357 Maximum or a 444 Marlin chambering.  The 45-70 would work as well.  There is nothing wrong with the 357 or 44 Magnum however.

Ohio law says the chambering has to be in a handgun with at least a 5 inch barrel shooting a straight walled cartridge.  It doesn't have to be a handgun cartridge.

With the difference in head size and what the G2 frame will withstand without stretching, The 44 mag will come clost to duplicating 444 Marlin velocities with much less recoil and powder.

OUt of a 14" barrel, you can push 300gr. cast bullets in excess of 1800fps and 280gr. cast bullets near 2000fps. The 444 marlin as shown in loading manuals, IMO is pushing the limit on what the contender frame is designed for. The 444 is a great round if used carefully, but from some of my buddies that had one, the recoil is much more punishing than the 44mag or 45LC.

Just my .02

Good shooting,

HL

Thanks for clarifying.

The Max is a nice round, one worth considering, with the only issue being ammo availability.  I do handload, but it's nice being able to just walk into a store and get ammo if needed.

I think any of the rifle based rounds, like the 444 or 45-70 will be WAY more than I intend to shoot.  I don't see me even trying to shoot a deer beyond 100yds with a handgun at this point in time.

I have a Ruger in 357 and I know first hand how little of a twitch it takes to miss a fair sized target with a handgun.

To me the 44 Mag or 445 Super mag, or 357, 360 Dan Wesson, or 357 Max is about tops for the strraight walled rounds.  MAYBE the 460 S&W but I don't think a Contender can handle that round, not sure.

The contender won't handle the 460. The encore will, however.

I have a Encore 460 S&W, I usually shoot 454 Casulls or Corbon 300 grain 45 Colt loads in it. Recoil very stiff with the 460......... :o

All the more reason to stick with something lighter.  For me anyway.  thanks.
