Reloading recipies please.
« on: April 13, 2003, 08:42:02 AM »
 I know it is "old/hashed and rehashed", but I am looking for good loads to put in my recipie book for 243, 7m-08, 30-06 and 7m Rem.  Very accurate, not necessarily hot.   I am just getting into reloading (my stuff should be coming this week) and I do not want to reinvent the wheel (bullet) I just want some good loads to start with.   Thanks to all who will weary themselves once again with a newbie reloader.

I don't load for accuracy, so my own loads may not be of much use to you (I think it varies from gun to gun anyway).  Over at Huntingnut.com there's a database of loads that members have submitted.  You may be able to get some ideas from there.

A good load that shoots well in both of my rifles is 48 grains of IMR 4064 and the Sierra 165 grain hollow point.   :-D
If I can make it go bang it can't be that hard to do.

Reloader beat me to the punch... but I was going to suggest trying IMR 4064... I have had outstanding luck with it throughout the midrange of bullet weights in my .30-06. 150, 160, and especially 180 grain bullets loaded for boar hunting have performed GREAT for me using IMR 4064.
One thing I feel remiss without saying though is this. Get the loading manual(s) for the bullet(s) you intend to use, and use the data derived specifically for those particular bullets. IMHO, that takes a lot of trial and error out of developing a load. Be sure to look at the loading manual data which will tell you what cases, primers (pay particular attention whether the primers used were magnum or not) test barrel length etc. and you will have a really good bellwether for what performance to expect... By the way, if you are interested in a great little FREEWARE exterior ballistics program, let me know... I can either email you the .ZIP file, or you can download it directly from the site map on my website. (link in my signature)  Dave

My 30-06 LOVES  54-55 gr IMR 4350, Rem case, any large rifle primer, and nearly any 180 gr bullet - but Speer spires and Nosler Partitions will usually stay within 1.25 inch at 100.  Cariobu die when hit with it - some guns might take a little more powder but I love the accuracy of this load.

Thanks guys.  Every recipe is appreciated.  Right now the only powder I have is IMR 4831.  But here is a question . . . what is the difference between say Winchester primers and CCI primers.  My spear book has all recipies using CCI (which I imagine is somehow tied with Speer).  Can I use any primer  if it is the same type ie.. large rifle magnum? How can primers of the same type be that much different?

There can be quite a difference in some guns and loads.

Maybe look for some of the old threads on primers to learn more.  But I haven't had any trouble with my 30-6 loads switching among CCI and Win primers - the two main brands I use.  But note I also may drop down a grain when trying a different primer or bullet.  With my 300 win where I'm pushing the upper limits more, I'll drop down 2 grains or more.  More and more one should be very careful as the higher tech bullets and powders are used.  Get a couple more load books and compare, and start carefully. I think primers can be more critical in hand gun loads, Lyman shotgun book shows how just changing a wad or primer can make a big difference in shotgun pressures. Good luck.

One more thing

Forgot to say - IMR 4831 would be my second choice of powder for my 30-06 and 180 gr bullets.  Can't remember the load I used but I was pleased with it too. It might be a little more forgiving with primers etc since its a little slower than 4350.  If I was just starting I'd be curious to try out the Reloader 19 and 22 - some of the newer loading books show impressive performance of these powders in the 30-06 - much faster than the IMR powders.

Ok, thanks for the info.  I did see on "stevespages" that he is a real fan of Reloader 22 for the 7mm.  And other Reloader powder for other calibers.
