BLR, Which Caliber?
« on: September 26, 2006, 08:03:58 AM »
I am thinking on a good deer/black bear/hog (in that order) rifle.  Most shots if not all will be taken from 30 to 200 yards.  I've pretty much narrowed it down to three in the BLR.  The .30-06, .308 and the 358 W.  I don't reload and realize I'll have to special order ammo for the 358.  Anybody care to help me with my decision?  Any input will be appreciated.

I like the short action version of the rifle better than the long action. Handling both might help you make up your mind. Also, the .358 is cool, but the .308 is ubiquitous. How high is your inconvenience threshold?

At those ranges, I'd say 358, followed by the 308 (I prefer the short action BLRs).

Since you specified that you don't reload, I would go with the 308.  I agree with the other posters in that the short action feels so much better.  Nothing wrong with the 3006 obviously, I just don't like it in the BLR.  The 358 is the real workhorse of the lot but it really requires reloading.
