What do you guys think the better caliber is on deer to elk... Also the positives and negative of the two and your experiances with them...

Of the two, I'd take the 280Rem. It'll is much more plesant to shoot, will do anything the 7mm mag will do and do it without the recoil of the 300 mag. Now if you need one that will reach across the canyon, they all will, can you?

Oh well, I'd choose the 7mm mag for the reasons I just gave you. I've used both, the 7mm mag more, and it's all ya need and then some.

Years ago I had a 30-338 mag build. 338mag case necked down to 30 or 7mag case neck up to 30 cal best of both worlds but still a 30cal. I've taken alot of elk/deer with a 7mm and 30cal and since I normally hunt a combination season I may be alittle over gunned on deer but not on elk if using a 300mag. You have to also look at bullet selection and I know the 7mm has some great bullets I just had a 280AI and 7x57 build but I won't use either for elk. Well good luck.

I have owned both. If I had to choose one it would be the 300. It gives you more options on heavier bullets for larger game. More reloading options with the 30 cal. So very many bullets to choose from.

Both excellent cartridges but the 300 get the nod when bigger game are a consideration. A good 180gr load out of a 300 win mag is hard to beat for an all around big game combination from whitetails to griz.

I shoot 160gr bullets from the 7mag and 200gr bullets from the 300WM. They both do the same thing. Which is kill deer and elk very, very dead. If I were facing something that was gonna eat me, I would prefer to have the 300.

I own both and with the 300 Win mag I shot a deer at 180 yds using the 180 gr bullets witch my 300 likes to shoot, and the area where the bullet entered was runed. So I don't shoot deer that close anymore with it.
Now my 7mm would do the job without any problems with the 130 gr bullet.

My shooting and hunting pal owns 3 7 mag.'s and I have 3 .300's. In addition, he has a couple .300's and I have a couple 7 Mag.'s. I have shot both since they came on the market. I do like the .300 best simply because I have had excellent success with it.

My faith in this rifle is absolute. However, the 7's have a bit less recoil, and almost as much punch.

Shoot both and see which you like best. I could hunt the riest of my days with either, but I guess I would prefer the old .300 I bought in 1970. To me these are to top of the line for anything short of brown bear in the brush.

I did have a pal who shot a .300 and it was his bear rifle for all conditions. He lived in Alaska, but since has passed on the the happy hunting grounds.

That sums it up quite well!! I was on the 7Mag kick back in the 80's, I owned a Ruger #1, 77 & a stainless barreled Model 700. I decided in the mid-90's to go with a 300 mag for this class or type of rifle & I have not looked back. The 7's did not fail me, I like the penetration & windbucking edge the 200 gr. bullets like the Accubond (BC of .588!!) offer. The 300 kicks more, so if you don't mind a heavier rifle(I don't) it is not a problem, if you
want a light rifle this may change things for you. Like what was said before, shoot both.

I've used both a LOT... I've taken moose bear and many other animials with 7mm's and 300 mags....

The 7 Rem. Mag. would be my pick, as it has less recoil, and will do anything the 30 will do....

A 7 Rem. Mag. with a 175 NP will flatten a big bear just like a 300 mag. will with a 200 NP...

Deer to elk? Both are excellent. My 7mm Rem Mag has been taking elk and deer successfully since I first got it in 1982. For all but one year the bullet was a 160g Grand Slam. No lost elk or deer, no tracking jobs. Had one cow go 50 yards, the furthest any have gone. At 350 yards, my longest shot, the Grand Slam went right through a 6x5 bull. He dropped on the shot, got up and took a couple steps before going down for good.

This year I will probably be hunting elk with my virgin .300 Win and 180g North Forks. An extra 10 foot-pounds of recoil will be the price. Sure don’t need that for deer, but I’ll be using it for that, too.

The best? The one that pleases you. Choose a Partition or better and either will work very, very well.

I went thru several phases in rifle cartridge power relatint to my deer and elk hunting, 30-06 to 338 to 300 Win mag and now the 7MM Rem mag, 30-06, 270. They all kill elk very dead and are more than necessary for deer. I say shoot whatever you choose a lot and make good hits, you will get your trophies. With good bullets placed properly I couldn't tell that the 338 had any real edge on the 270 in killing power other than exit holes were bigger. If I were to quit philandering around with all these different riflesand had to pick one it would be the 30-06 I kept.

When it comes to kiling power, they are both the same. I know the 300 wm has more "ME" but there is only 1 kind of dead. However, the 300 win mag is flatter for the longer distances, so if your going to be shooting at deer or elk at over 400 yards, then get a 300 win mag, if under that range, 7mm will do the trick (with the cost of less reoil while practicing at the range)

There is nothing wrong with free advise & a man's got to know his & his equipments limitations. I know a few people who can shoot
better at 400 yards than the average Joe can at 100 yards. I would say these clowns need to learn how to shoot at 100 yards
before they shoot at 100 yards & I also feel that nobody needs to set a maximum range that OTHERS should shoot because of personal feelings, whether it is 100 or 500 yards.

Most of my long range shooting has been done in Wyoming wher the big variable is the wind. A bullet may have to negotiate three different wind speeds that may not all be going in the same direction. When you start dealing with doping wind drift of over four feet and you can only judge by seeing dustfly your starting to get into the gray area of ethical shooting. Just because you have a rangefinder and know the drop doesn't mean you have all the variables. This said 400 yards is a pretty good distance and if you can make every shot you get at 350 yards and under you will take lots of game.

Without a doubt, wind is far more difficult than trajectory. With good ranging, the trajectory can be plotted if you know exactly what
your load is doing. Wind can be and often is different in speed & direction where the animal is standing than where the shooter is. You must take time to watch the vegatation, grass, limbs, etc. where you are, where the animal is and in between for wind velocity
& direction. And of course this is where velocity & high BC help, but is not a cure all, not even close. To me it is simple, if you don't know about the wind, don't shoot. I have seen days in WY. with the crazy winds where I would not shoot 200 yards, let alone a long shot.

I have both and like the 300WM for its versatility and greater range of bullet weights (125gr-240gr). I have taken deer and elk with both, it just seems that the 200gr bullets in the 300 tend to put them down a little quicker. In the end, though, dead id dead.

They are both great choices but I would pick the 7mm mag because I have a 338 win mag. I think the 7mm will shoot a little flatter.

seems some folks got lost in the question.......of the two I would with out question select the 300 win mag. why,way more selection of bullets to choose from.and heavier bullets.can even down load to 100 grainers for varmints if you wanted.I have owned two 7mm remington mags a browning A bolt ss stalker and still own a sako (very nice looking rifle)..years ago I took her hunting a lot 7mm rm..I just did not like the preformance of bullets that came out of her.maybe I ought give her another chance with todays better bullets.even if the bullets proved better..I would still take the .300 over the 7mm rem mag.

Here's a picture of a cow elk taken by my hunting buddy last Saturday. He used a 7mm Rem Mag and a 160g Speer Trophy Bonded. The blood on the shoulder is the exit wound.

Now, just to clarify things, here's a picture of my cow elk taken a couple minutes later with a .300 Win Mag and a 180g North Fork:

Both shots were broadside double-lung hits with exits.

See the difference?

I use the 7 mag for everything but if i had to choose a new caliber it would be the 300wm,no down range difference at normal hunting distances,more kick from the 300,not as plesant to shoot PDs with like i do with my 7 mag.
