Should I get a new bow?
« on: September 28, 2006, 12:20:11 AM »
Right now I am shooting a 2000 or 2001 Hoyt MT Sport 28" DL  70# with Beeman ICS Hunter carbon arrows and Rocket Arrowhead 100gr. at 250 fps. Last year I killed a nice 6 pointer with this set up but I would like to get a little more speed. I really like this bow but I have been lookin at the new Bear Instinct as a possible replacement. Do I really need more speed or am I just gettin caught up in the speed hype? Is there anyway to speed up my current set up without an overdraw?

Greetings from Georgia,

Speed is good, although as you already know, it is not neccessary to shoot 300 + fps. I started hunting with an old Whitetail bow and did fine. I later started shooting a 55# recurve with cedar arrows, no rest or sights and had a ball !!  I see the speed trend in bows going at much the same speed as the trend of magnum cartridges in rifles. Just 30 years ago, a 30-30 was a good choice and a 30/06 was considered too much. Nowdays a 30/06 is considered marginal and a short mag or regular magnum gets a lot of press as being the best choice for deer. At the same time a station wagon or sedan use to be good for a family vehicle, but now we all "need" a great big ol' SUV to haul around the kids.

Keep in mind that for many centuries the Native Americans harvested game effectively and they never had wheels, cams, cables, stabilizers, oferdraws, carbon, aluminum, titanium etc., etc. I believe that once you have harvested game with a set up, you kinda get attatched to it. Get a new bow if you want one, but do not get caught up in the marketing ploy to convince you that all the speed and widgets are required to kill a deer.

    Good Luck,
     Dave

dhunt1973,

I might not be the best to answer this as I am still shooting the Ben Person I bought 2 years before my son was born, he turned 24 this month. The need for speed is over rated, yes you do need some, but not as much as people will preach about, the thing you need is an intimate knowledge of your bow, if you have that and place your shots well the extra speed is not needed. If I can kill deer with a 26+ year old compound bow then you can do it with the one you have, just practice practice practice, the fastest bow in the world will not amount to a hill of beans if you can't shoot it.

Yes you should get a new bow, but more importantly you should cheer a real football conference, the Big Ten.

The nice fat doe I shot last night, didn't know it was providing liver and onions tonight, via a 25 year old Browning shooting 34" XX75 full blank, with a goofy sale (sharp) rotating broadheads from Dick's. Blood was sprayed 5' in either direction... 25 yard recovery. friends who come and shoot in my back yard, laugh at me shooting those huge slow arrows, no release, no sight!

Big 10 or 11 or.... Nice conference, but wouldn't it be wonderful if the Granite boys, from the sleepy town of Durham, New Hampshire, in the shadows of Mt Washington
in the White Mountains (highest recorded wind on earth), returned to Mid America to paste another Big 10 bowl team this year! Go Wildcats #1, 1AA!!!!

The toughest conference. All you so called powerhouse southern/eastern/western teams wouldn't have so many titles if you played up here. Yeah don't know why we ever let Penn State in anyway, they haven't exactly excelled since joining.

Hey Graybeard, I have an idea for a new forum... College football!

Save your money...Most deer are killed within 25 yards with a bow...I started with a Bear 45lb  recurve in the 60s...Moved to a Bear Whitetail in the 70s and bought a used Mountaineer in the 90s...Still use it  and killed deer with all of them...

While we are at it....I still shoot fingers, no peep, no stabliizer, aluminum arrows and 125 Thunderheads.

About the football forum...Graybeard doesn't care about sports...Doubt if it will happen...

I'm sure there are other topics here that Graybeard isn't interested in.
It's definately applies to outdoors, except in those lame domes.

What do you mean that GB doesn't care about sports! We got the handgun forums, in case anybody's interested in the NBA!
