Spare parts for Mosin Nagant
« on: September 28, 2006, 01:20:49 AM »
Just bought my first of many I hope. Of all the hours I've been on web sites reading I have found few spare parts for sale. Yes I know the advice is, "They're so cheap just buy a couple for spare parts." But seriously can't a guy buy a spare bolt, front or rear sight, blah, blah, blah. I found stocks, slings, and bayonets but no other metal parts.

bearfat - unless someone comes up with a good website to go to, and I would suggest Numrich, Sarco or Samco, if you haven't already tried those sites, I would get another rifle and use that for spare parts. Sorry, but HTH.  Mikey.

I've done a lot of business with Tn. Gun Parts and Layne is a great guy to deal with.

Wow!!! You guys have some ferret skills....I thought I was good but I didn't find any of those sites.

I'm still looking at the first one suggested. Tons of parts:    "Numrich" Gun Parts Corp

I'm sure between them all I can find any and every metal part for a Mosin Nagant I want.

Thanks Stan in Sc, jack19512, and Mickey!

Can't wait to shoot this thing. I'm still cleaning, oiling, fondling and taking it apart (wife doesn't know yet but I think she suspects another gun came into house).

I don't know if you reload or not but I have 4 M/N's and none of them really shot well until I reloaded for them.

Just telling you this so in case yours doesn't shoot that well you won't get disappointed with your rifle.

I have a M/N M38 that has turned out to be a real good shooter.  Some people say their M/N's shot good but none of mine did with the ammo I tried.

Here is the last 3 shot group of my reloads I tried with my M38.

Tried some new Wolf hunting loads, and 2 different military surplus at 75 yards. The results were indeed dismal.

I guess I might start with a new trigger. I looked at www.huberconcepts.com and it would be the fastest quick fix. Deer hunting is only 6 weeks away!

I would be satisfied with a firm 3" group at 75 yards.

I don't want to discourage you but I really don't think a new trigger is going to turn your M/N into an instant tack driver.  A good trigger is always nice but I think you should look at other areas first before investing money into a trigger to start with that may not help your cause.  It is your money though.

Have you examined your bore and crown?  Has your bore been thoroughly cleaned?  Have you bothered to slug your bore to see what size it really is?

My M38 shoots real good with .308 diameter bullets but my 91/30 that I reload for won't shoot worth a crap with the .308 bullets.  I had to go to the .311 diameter bullets to get my 91/30 to shoot accurately.

Again, as far as the trigger goes, all of my M/N's have the stock trigger and a better trigger would be nice but as you can see from the pic of the  group from my M38 it wasn't necessary.  And this group was from a rifle that would shoot around a 6 to 8 inch group from about 75 yards with the ammo I had tried in it.   :)

Took my M38 out today and shot it some more.  I tried seating the bullet closer to the lands but it didn't like it as well so I will have to start seating the bullet a little deeper until I find that sweet spot.

Distance was according to my range finder 98 yards but I thought it was 100 because I actually took a large tape measure there once and measured it off.  Not a tack driver but not bad for a deer rifle.  I know this rifle will shoot better than this though and I will reload some more and seat the bullet a little deeper and try it again.   :)

I suppose it's habit with the trigger. I usually replace them on everything if I can. I agree unless your talking real precision shooting probably not going to see big difference. I gained a few points when I was doing competition rifle shooting DCM/CMP.

I checked the crown with a jewlers eye piece. Saw nothing to alarm me. I could feel the difference in bore size just with my .30 cal copper cleaning brushes. A new brush already felt worn out. I used Breakfree, Kano Kroil and USP bore paste to clean it. Worked on it for about 4-5 days every night for 20 mins or so. I'm not certain but looks like a little pitting (certainly better than my M1 Garand was) but the M/N has nice defined lands.

I was just hoping to not have to reload, but can't think of many rifles I haven't reloaded for to wring the most out of it. Certainly the Nagant is shooting as good as my Ruger Mini 14 and that thing has a scope!

Well a new die won't break me, got plenty of IMR3031 powder and rifle primers. Just need the brass and bullets.

I'm getting mixed messages about the corrosive primers though and cleaning the barrel.  I used windex followed with an electrical parts degreaser and then Breakfree gun oil. Some saying ammonia does nothing to get the corrosive salt out? Plain old soap and hot water works the best? Definitely regular cleaning solvents will not break the corrosive salts down in barrel?

Your pictures are encouraging jack19512. I seem to be shut down from posting anymore pic's in GBO no matter what forum I go to. Says folder full?

Like I said before, some say their M/N's shoot good although I rarely if ever see any pics of their groups.  Could be some peoples idea of shooting good is different than mine.  I have no use for a rifle that will not group reasonably well.

I have 4 M/N's and none of them group worth a crap with the ammo I have tried in them and reloading was the only way I could get any decent accuracy out of them.

I have to be honest even I was amazed at the accuracy capability of my M38 after reloading for it.  I was pretty sure I could improve the accuracy but never did I dream by this much.  The M38 of mine has actually turned out to be one of the most accurate rifles I own.  I have actually shot better groups with it than I have with my Swiss K31 so far.

All of my shooting takes place off the hood of my truck so if I had a more stable platform I could probably do better.  I reloaded some more ammo tonight and seated the bullets deeper and I should see an improvement in the groups tomorrow.   :)

Of the powders I have tried so far IMR4895 has been the most accurate.  My M38 really likes the Barnes Triple-Shock .308 168 gr. Boattail bullet.  I haven't got any IMR3031 to try.  I do not shoot any corrosive ammo in my rifles except if I get another rifle and I just want to see how well it shoots with the mil-surplus ammo.

Here is a pic of a group I shot a while back using powder I had pulled from Checz mil-surplus ammo.  I think this was a 5 shot group but maybe only a 4 shot group I just can't remember.
