« on: September 29, 2006, 05:43:46 AM »
We really need to get on Ruger's case and see if they will produce a 5 shot Bisley in 480 Ruger, in blue or stainless, with any bbl. length you want. Wadda ya think?  8)

I'd buy the first one I saw - blued or stainless - doesn't matter.

Ruger never seems to care what the public wants.

I wouldn't count in a factory 5 shot .480 SA.  While it would be nice, I don't see the R&D being worth the time, effort and expence of all the tooling to produce such a model.  For those serious enough to REALLY want one, there's plenty of very good gunsmiths quite capable of producing this model from existing Rugers.  Otherwise, why not a Freedom Arms?  Costs more either way yes, but if one REALLY wants one, money shouldn't be an obstacle.

Ruger is NOT gonna produce a five shooter, ain't gonna happen so ya might as well stop dreaming and have one made up by a custom smith if you really want one. That's engraved in stone on a wall that ain't never gonna be taken down.

I often think the same thing; that Ruger has something against 5 shooters. Then I recall that they seem to have done quite well with the SP 101. Obviously, they do know how to and how well. Whether they could swallow their quid long enough to build a single action or not remains....  It certainly is perplexing that the future of the very first Ruger cartridge has been allowed to languish in the hands of so many non-Ruger gun builders. They can't not understand what we want. Shoot, I now have two less-than-ideal 480s - one a Ruger, one not. (No wonder it [the 480] isn't setting the shooting world on fire. It's hard to get excited about a great cartridge when the gun ain't right. The wrong guns have killed plenty of excellent cartridges.

The SP101 and a 5 shot large frame SA are two completely different animals.  Apples and oranges.  Regarding the inability to make a lg frame SA with a 5-shot cylinder.  Actually they have. I know that at least one prototype was made chambered in .50AE I believeit was.  It was hoped to coincide with the company's 50th anniversary a few years back but didn't materialize.
While I too would like to see a .480 SA by Ruger, if one really wanted one bad enough, why woudn't they look at MR or FA?  Still quality firearms with more than enough strength.  May cost a bit more but if you gotta have it, is the cost that much of an issue?

It is rather odd that Ruger isn't giving the 480 more support than they have. They bring it out in one gun and that's it. When the 480 SRH was introduced I thought it would only be a matter of (short) time before we had single actions in 480. The SRH is a fine gun, but for alot of people it's just not their cup of tea. Another Ruger gun that the 480 might have had potential in is their lever action.

Sure a small DA and a large SA are different, but I think we know Ruger is not necessarily opposed to building 5 shooters - and actaully it makes more sense in a SA, which is less of a self-defense type weapon, than is a DA. Having a 480 is quite possible which is why I have two already. What I know, though, is that neither is the gun that Ruger could quite easily build on a single action. The BFRs are very big. Even as only a five shooter, the BFR 480/475 has a lot bigger cylinder than the SRH. I know Ruger has the ability and expertise to scale that down. Taurus may have been building the most useful version of a 480 in terms of a reasonable sized revolver which was neither too large nor too heavy - if you like Taurus and ports, but that is no longer made.

And sure, one could buy the even more expensive FA revolver in 480 chambering. Again, one is back to having, for practical carry, a 5 shooter. No, it isn't about not being able to get 480s. Obviously it can bge done. I think the question is more one of why Ruger doesn't support their very own cartridge in ways people want it. There is a niche that is almost completely untouched except at high cost. Obviously Ruger could fill that. I don't think they are anyone else would be disappointed with the result.

Maybe in a few decades, they'll revisit the cartridge just as Remington has done with the 350 Mag and bring it back in a platform which is more appealing. That hardly seems likely given the many other good cartridges which never got a second chance. And that's too bad. The 480 is a very well balanced "big" cartridge.

I can't believe Ruger has totally missed the boat on this one.  A five shot .480 on the Bisley/SRH frame would sell like crazy, just like a five shot .44 Special on one of their 50th anniversary .357 frames would.  I would be more than willing to pay $5-600 on a five shot small framed .44 Special Ruger, and would do the same for a .480 in the larger frame.  Maybe Ruger will come to their senses, but it is unlikely.

I have always wanted to have Bowen build a 5-shot .44 Special on an old 3-screw .357 I have, but I simply cannot justify the $1300 price tag at this point. I am still surprised no one has picked up on the demand for this and began offering a semi-production model at the $5-600 range.  There is little doubt they wouldn't sell, as the .44 Special has really increased recently in popularity.

Maybe Taurus will do it... ;D

Regarding the 44 special...there's other manufacturers offering single actions chamberd for the .44 special.  How many d you see?  How many people do you now thatown one?  While there are those, myself included, that would .like a Ruger SA in .44 special, there really isn't a huge market out there that would justify the production time.
It is rumored though, that there may be such a model offered in '07 as a Skeeter Skelton commemmorative or something like that.  I'm still considering simply having one done exactly as I'd want it and send a Bh off to Clements for the conversion.

I would rather spend $750 - $800 on a BFR and be done with it. Even if Ruger did come out with a 5 shot SBH or Bisley, the fit and finish would not be near as good as a BFR. And if you sent a Ruger off to a smith and paid for an action job, throat, recrown, recut forcing cone, remove endshake and set barrel/cylinder gap to minimun, freewheel cylinder, locking base pin and handlapped barrel, you would have more in it than a new BFR, which already has all these.

If it sounds like I am fed up with Ruger's poor quality in recent years, I am.
