New 1895 XLR is AWSOME

I got about 3 hours range time this morning with my new XLR...The rifle is simply amazing...Got it bore sited...and put the first 5 shots with Speers 300 grain Hot Core......in a 1-1/8" groups...It impressed the range master so much...he had to witness the target...Next I put the Evolution's thru it...had a heck of a time rezeroing it in...I figured since it's a new rifle and all...but I put my last 3 shots of the box in a nice 3/4" group...and will be buying somemore of it real soon..probably tonite  ;)...I tried some Winchester factory 300 grainers...They grouped at 2-1/8"...and some of the Remington 300 grainers went for 3-7/8"...Both the Winchesters and Remingtons are hitting a full 5" lower than the Hornady's... with the Hornady's point of aim set at 3" high at 100 yards...I was hoilding at the top of the target when shooting them...My 2400 fps+ Partion loads shoot real good...and Reflex264 older 350 grain Hornady round nose loads are even better...but...geeeeeeze they kick in this rifle..It was the only load that I come close to hitting my eye with ...even with the Leupold set on 2x....but man they are accurate right close to the Hornadys...and as good than the Speers......Ran out of time...and the rain started coming down pretty good...so it was time to call it a day...I took along a 25-06 Handi to try out...and had some ejection problems with it...time for the old bb trick behind the spring to cure it...I'll post some pics later on of the groups...The range was too crowed to set up the old chronoghraph...so that will have to come in the middle of the week...or on Sunday morning when they first open..I'll be trying the 200 grain Northforks out of the 338-06 Handi...and hopefully get my 25-06 Handi to eject everytime...this coming week at the range...

I'm am a very happy shooter today...a couple factory 1" loads..and 2 good reloads reloads doing the close to the same...I'll borrow BL's saying for this one..." Life is Good" Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Here's the 300 grain Federals...and the smaller holes are from my NEF 25-06..



This is the Hornady's next to the bull on the right...along with the Winchester 300 grainers...on the left...and the Remington 300 grainers on the right..

Mac,

I picked up the same gun this year and i agree with you. This gun is awesome. When I first got it I was loading 350 grain Hornady hollow points. Fun, but my shoulder didn't think so after a range outing.

So, I switched loads to a Cast Performance 405 grain bullet over a load of Varget powder. At 100 yards I can get a nice 3" group, and this is with my Williams peep sight. I did slug the bore and I am using the 459 diameter bullet....but my micrometer says they are actually .4585.

The 405 grain\Varget load is eaiser to shoot than the hotter hollow point loads. They also bring down a whitetail without taking out an entire hind quarter.(No expansion of the lead bullet)

Well...I'll have along both my XLR...and my 338-06 ASquare Ultra Handi-rifle...



They kinda go together ehh ;)

You can't tell in by the picture...but...the 24" 1895 XLR is approx. 1/2" longer than the 26" Ultra-Handi...but they must have really slimmed down the forend on the XLR...it's 1.570" wide at the center of the forearm on the diamond...and the Handi is 1.685" wide..at the forend screw......They both feel good going to the shoulder...and I think since both are the grey lams...they compliment each other nicely...

This was a timely and informative thread.
I finally got to spend some more quality time with my 1895 today and with several types of ammo before the CT Deer rifle season and my Thanksgiving TX Hog Hunt.
I also have a Williams FP peepsite on my Marlin & the Green Firesight in front (no Hood while shooting).
I started with the factory loads: Rem 405 produced poor groups; rem 300 decent, Winchester 300 a little better. I then pulled out my HandLoads and was pleasently surprised...with 49gr of RE7 and a 300 gr Sierra FNHP I was consistently putting up decent groups, especially as I am still working to improve my open site shooting...if scoped, I know it would have tighted up.

I was really encouraged with these results. I like the idea of having open sites on one of my hunting rifles, gonna be a fun pig gun.
