still haven't got the scratch for the 357 barrel
« on: September 29, 2006, 11:51:24 AM »
I am dying.  Have had the Handi boxed up for 6 weeks now.  A fuel pump, baby doctor visit, school supplies, and everything else have conspired against me.  It looks like Nov 2 will be my first paycheck with money for the 357 barrel.  I hope that they still have them, but deer season with the Handi right out.  Man, everyday I see that box by the kitchen door and it is nagging at me.  Bajabill's post got me to typing....oh, well, it is only a matter of time.

Just my thoughts on the matter but I got the .357 about 3 years ago and still don't have an accurate load for it. I just keep it in the gun vault and think about it every once in a while. I prefer to shoot cast bullets (but do shoot jacketed once in awhile) and had my best luck with low powered .38 special loadings with 120-125 grain slugs. Hardly what you would want to hunt deer with. ???

Have you tried the 158gr Hornady XTP?  We have got these shooting extremely accurate in my dads mag and pretty well in my max too.  He was also pretty happy with the Remington high velocity factory ammo.

Just a couple to try.

Would be happy to take that problem child off your hands Hagen.

I am going to ream to 357 Max so I think that it will be okay for the little deer around here.  I sold my 44 barrel because it just wouldn't perform.  It turned out to be .432 when I slugged it.  I haven't heard anything about oversized 357 barrels.  If they are out of stock then I am thinking 22 Hornet or 30/30.

Dont underestimate the maxi.
With proper bullets, good placement and with in its range. I wouldn't hesitate it on any bit the absolute biggest of americas big game. I would prefer more for the big brears.
More realistically there isnt a Whitetail alive that you could harvest with the Maxi and at least a 170gr bullet.

I thing we could say the same thing about the .357 Magnum out of a rifle length barrel.

My 357 is great after I reamed it Max, 15 minutes easy to do. it shoot better after
reaming with 38 Spl & 357 Mag. every body that is Handi-holic needs 357 max.
 just my 2 cents Marv.
