OK Gents which is the best out there?
22LR, Auto or Revolver
Under $600.00
Use: 1. Competion Target 50ft to 25yds
2. Silhoute 100yds
3. Hunting 30yds Max

Yes I want the S&W 41 or a Freedom arms but just can't afford them. Rugers maybe but I have had inaccurate Mark I II, and IIIs

I like my Browning Buckmarks but do not think they are any more accurate than the Ruger MKII

I've found the MKII Government Target model and the MKIII Hunter to be very accurate, much more so than the shooter. "Accuracy" sometimes depends on the ammo. My Single Six (6" barrel) will shoot <1" groups from an 2-hand position with CCI standard velocity ammo and I can't get close to that with Federal 36 gr hp (550 round bulk). Yesterday I was unable to get decent groups with a 22A, MKIII H and Single Six at 25 yards using a bench for support. Switched to the CCI SV and things got much better. I shoot a lot of the Federal Bulk because it's been the least expensive, most reasonably accurate (for the price). The last two boxes have been a bit different from stuff I've had in the past.

A Ruger with a sear and trigger upgrade will do a fine job at the distances you are talking about. You didn't say if you could use a scope. My Hunter with a BSA red dot does pretty well at 25 yards, sometimes overcoming the shooter's abilities. I think a Ruger will do pretty well. A 22A w/7" barrel might do pretty well, with the right ammo.

If intending to keep the gun factory stock, I'd get a Buckmark. If I wanted one I didn't mind replacing some parts on, I'd get a Ruger. I bought a Buckmark and got a trigger job for it to lighten the trigger pull. It's been a very good gun and I like it better than the Rugers.

Your $600 range will get you a High Standard 106, 107, Or a Victor NIB or ANIB if you shop around a bit. I've owned or tried every gun listed in this post, and the Victor is the one I kept. Best trigger by
far, great sights, and good balance. Mine has a 1.2 lb factory trigger that is superb.

Look in Gun List, GunBroker etc.

I have to say that I don't feel Ruger's are inaccurate. All of them that I have owned, have shot very well indeed. Their big handicap was the lousy trigger. For your price range, I would buy the Ruger, then upgrade the trigger and sear with one of the kits out there. You'd have an excellent gun and still have a bunch of money left over. As far as that goes, my local dealer has a used Sig Trailside for just over $400. That would certainly shoot as good or better than a Ruger or Buckmark. 44 Man.

Ruger MK 2 5.5" best they ever made. My trigger was good out of the box. I have a Ruger MK 1 6 7/8" tapered that is a shooter also, wears a red dot. For the revolver, a DA it is a S&W 617, this you will leave to your heirs.

I have two ruger MKIIs,a 6-7/8 target and a 22/45 target with 4-3/4 bull barrel.Both very accurate out of the box.If I were to use them for competition or silhouette at 100 yards,I would do like 44 man said and upgrade trigger and sear.

Thanks Gents, Some very good feedback. Most seem to lean twords the ruger with a trigger up grade. I wonder how a S&W 617 6" with a accuracy job be, it may prove do able. May stretch my budget abit. Has anyone had any experiance with the CZ 75 Kadet, or the Beretta 87 Target?

Next which version of the new Rugers lends its self to making that quality Target pistol? I will probable steer clear of red dots or optical sights, keeping things simple and I like open sights on a silhoute / target rig. I think some of you folks have just scratched the surface; I know you'll have thought about this idea a little more indepth. Lets hear what you'll really think would work best. Or maybe what you would like to see come out of the big manufactures? Thanks Old Moss

My Mk.II 678GC is superb out to 25 yards. With VQ accurizing kit amoungst other upgrades, it now has a trigger pull of 1lb 9.7oz. Upgrade info and pics at http://www.bghi.us/index.php?x=678gc

I would recommend the Sig Trailside Target pistol. Adjustable sights, 6" barrel and a nice trigger that doesn't need any further tinkering. Accurate enough for bullseye shooting even though you may find it a bit light for formal target competition.

Mine is a few years old but I believe the current price would fall under your top figures.

High Standard gets my vote. I prefer the Citation model. I kept it with open sights and it was my competition pistol for silhouettes out to 100 meters. Many a jack rabbit met their end thanks to this pistol. I second the earlier recommendation to check out Gun Broker.

I personally have never heard of anyone having an accuracy problem with Ruger. My MIII, slab side target will print a group at 25 yards and at 50 yards that will keep up with olympic guns. I also have seen many others that will do the same.

If you set a price cap on accuracy you'l also be setting a limit on the accuracy ofwhat you'll buy. The lesser priced models are such becasue they're not tuned, etc as the better target models are. Get what'll do what you want from the get go or get something that'll need work to help it get there. While not sure about 100yrs stuff you may be able to find a used Benelli MP model for $600+ maybe. If 100yrd shooting is a biggy, I'd opt for a single shot or a evolver (FA) Maybe look for a Savage Striker or a Competitor also. Both would be under the $600 price cap. The later would also allow diversity with it's interchangeable bbl system.

The 617 will need"NADA", SA trigger is crisp, Da action well I don't know how you gage that. I think in a 22 DA there can be no finer made for its accuracy and price. I have a Ruger target grade MK2 bull barrel that will challange it.

Your requirements are contradictory. A gun suitable for 25 yd. bullseye is probably too short for 100 yd. silhouette. The silhouette requires a long barrel not suitable for normal bullseye.
For normal bullseye, consider a S&W Model 41, probably the top American target pistol. For silhouette, a Ruger Mk III with a 10" barrel may be a better bet.

I just ran a box of standard velocity rounds threw my new Ruger Slab Side stainless with the target grips and shot better than I have EVER shot off had before. From a rest, it is incredible....for around $400.

Go for a ruger single six with a 9.5" barrel. Shooter depending itll shoot accurately to 100yards, and makes a great hunting gun. .22 mags for long range hunting, and regular .22's up to 30 yards.

Been there and shot almost all of the guns listed so far. I finally ended up with a Berreta Model 89 that i sent out to 10ring precision for an NRA bullseye accuracy job. Of course the initial outlay was cheap but added on a couple of hundred for what i needed. It worked as I took State Bullseye Championships for four years running.

S&W Model 41's can be over-rated at best. The Ruger MKII, well dont want to get into it. Whatever you choose, you will need to try out several brands of ammo to see which one works the best for that pistol as I have found a lot of variances in ammo quality.

Dont have a beretta model 87 but I do have an accurized Model 89 worked on by TenRing Precision out of Texas. Awesome .22!! Shot so good i sold my hammerli and then went on to take four state 2700 championships in hawaii with it too. A pic is attaached for you.
