Got a couple of Partridge
« on: September 30, 2006, 09:12:13 PM »
Well Ruffed Grouse if you want to be technical but we always called them Partridge. Took the crossbow  out tonite to do some deer hunting and took the 870 in case I ran into some partridge as I shot a few there last year. Saw 6 got 2. Not bad for the first group of birds for the season. Still pretty thick yet for good bird hunting but I like to get out when the leaves are turning Fall is my favorite time of the year. Saw some deer but nothing I could get a shot at. Funny thing was after I got into town after dark I saw a nice racked buck it had at least 4 on each side so it was at least a good 8 if not ten or 12. Kinda hard to see since he was on the side of the road about 20 yards off and I could not slow down as I had cars behind me. Hope no one hits him he was a nice buck.

Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

very good. I got four partridge the other day. three within 15 minuites.. good eating. The best way to hunt them up here in Northern maine is late afternoon along the many logging roads,, go slow and watch carefully until you spot that prarie chicken eating gravel and move slow.. lots of fun. I use a Marlin single shot 12 gauge,, break open. The partridge have been scarce and you have to sometimes drive many miles. The break open is nice as it goes from unloaded(truck legal) to ready for action in a second.

ive got about 11 thus far this year.  have bin seeing lots though, smoe flush before i get to see them and others i am reluctant to shoot as they are close by to where im moose hunting and dont want to risk scaring the moose away.
