Potter CountyI
« on: October 01, 2006, 11:21:14 AM »
   I may be moving back to Potter County next year, how is the hunting situation these days. The last time I was hunting there was in the late 70's.

  Hi .32;

  I don't live in "God's country" but I live in the county just north of the invisible line, in Cattaraugus co.
   Since the 70s, it is my opinion that hunting has gotten even better than ever in most ways. Much more turkey and geese and generally, the deer population I believe is better, although that fluctuates year-to-year.
  I haven't observed the very heavy rabbit population of some of yesteryears....and I would venture to opine that squirrel are not as populous as in the 70s. This may be due to the influx of coyotes..rare in the 70s but much more populous here now.

   I think the DEC should soon aim to reduce coyote populations or our small game (including upland) may suffer substantially (IMHO).
  Our deer harvest has been a bit smaller the last couple years...some hunters blame that on the 'yotes..

...But then; the coyotes are a fun varmint to hunt also and they grow bigger here than in the western states..

   C'mon back and enjoy the hunting...where you been..and what is hunting like there ?

Been the Rochester NY area for to long.Will be retiring next year and want to get out of NY. Will still hunt in NY as we just bought a cabin near Wayland. Was wondering what the antler restrictions are for Potter County. NY is a good place to hunt but the  taxes are way to high.

a   Can't argue with you there 32-20..it is exactly as you said; hunyting is great here, but the liberal politiians , with their taxes, are driving people and businesses out.

  That kind of stuff is the beginning of the end, but what do they care ?
