Dustin Linebaugh's Alaskan Grizzly
« on: October 01, 2006, 02:42:12 PM »
Here are some pictures of an Alaskan Grizzly taken by Dustin Linebaugh and what he had to say about it:

"Here are a few bear pics, the first 3 are of my bear the last one is of my friend Tom & his bear two days earlier. A total of 3 bears in 3 days it was a good trip. I dispatched my bear with my old tried & true .475 24 grns of H110 with a 425 grn LFN muzzle velocity of 1100fps. The distance was 176 yds standing, the bear had just sat down from standing looking straight at us. The first round centered him in the chest penatrating straight through breaking the spine then exiting. After a round of congrats he started rolling around so I put two more broad side shots on him with my pistol. He measured 8.5 ft nose to tail his weight around 800 lbs best guess. For anyone interested in such an adventure contact www.Hollidayair.com attn Terry Holliday.  Feel free to pass this around to your friends that might be interested in seeing them. "

Best Regards
Dustin Linebaugh

Fiddlin' with some ballistic tables it appears that the slug would be traveling ~850-900 fps and, if regulated dead on at 50 yards, would have dropped ~ 35-40" at 175 yards. Good shot or not, I believe that this was a stunt rather than ethical hunting. Of course, only my $.02.

How much energy was the slug carrying at that range?  A big slug to be going 900fps.  Big enough to shoot through a grizzly apparently.

I am not questioning the power just that of lobbing a big slug into the vital zone at that range. It is akin to shooting elk at 500 yards with a 300 Mag. Sure folks do it, but I prefer to hunt then shoot.

Congratulations Dustin!  As for the negative comments here all I can say is there is a major difference between someone who puts in the time and effort to become competent at any range with their chosen weapon and folks who go off half cocked and try the same feats.  I guess into every forum a little rain must fall.  All that aside CONGRATULATIONS

??? No, I think it would be more like shooting an Elk at 176 yards. ???  Just curious here, but at what yardage does it turn from hunting to shooting?  Does it vary depending on the game being hunted?  Does it vary on the type of weapon the hunter is using?

I don't know all of the details about this hunt (maybe Lloyd has more information for us) but looking at the pictures there doesn't appear to be a whole bunch of cover to allow these hunters to stalk to within 5 yards of this animal undetected.

You keep fiddlin', I'm going shooting. :)

I copied this from my response to the doubters on the ruger forum.

what needs to be kept in mind is Dustin is one of the finest handgun shooters in the country and has been shooting big sixguns at long distance since he was a small boy. Ill guarantee you one thing. If you knew the guy youd know that he is the last person on earth that would show boat or take an unethical shot. If he squezzed the trigger he knew where the bullet was going. Im one that preaches against long range shooting of game because 99% of the shooters including myself arent capable making a shot like that every time we try it. But I know three people ive watched shoot that are. Dustin is one of them Jerry who was with him is probably one of the others and My buddy Al. YOu surely dont want to be standing 500 yards down range against any one of the three with a six gun of any kind.

I have seen Dustin shoot as well.  I dont have any problem with him taking that kind of a shot.

I took a nice doe with open sights on my .45-70 Marlin at a little in excess of 250 yards.  Now, I know that's not a handgun, but I had plenty of time to set up the shot and pick my spot, calculating bullet drop.  Centered her chest and put her down.  Hitting a 12" gong at 200 yards with my Contender is pretty easy once you get the hang of it.  My 7.5 inch Ruger Flattop will hit coffee cans all day long with open sights at 100 yards standing off hand!  Practice makes durn near perfect.

The holster that Dustin is wearing is made by Ringler Custom Leather of Powell, Wy., ( 307-645-3255 ). It is called a Wyoming Combination Holster and can be worn as a strong side, a cross draw, or a shoulder rig. Also carries six extra shells in the cartridge poush. Cost-- $ 155.75. I just got his catalog and am also interested in that holster.

I plan to carry a 4 3/4" .475 Linebaugh bicolor Vaquero with cocobolo grips that Dustin is going to build for me. I have asked him to make sure all misses are removed from the barrel so maybe one day I may shoot a bear at 400 yds. or  at the very least hit the ground at 3 feet.  Let you borrow it -- no problem, as long as you pay for the hunt and air fare.

George,

How can I pass up a deal like that?

Better get your order in quick.  I imagine the line is getting longer by the day.

There are those who can and those who cannot.  Some of those who cannot or will not put in the time and effort necessary to become really good with a revolver will always try to kick sand.

Dustin is a good friend and would not take a shot he could not make.  The proof is in the pudding.  Dustin has a fine bear at the end of a fine hunt and somebody has sour grapes.

I thought laws in Alaska outlawed bear hunting with a handgun.  I was also told any out of state bear hunter is required to have a guide with loaded rifle when hunting.  Has this changed?  Has someone filled me with a bunch of BS?  I have several guns I would love to hunt AK bear with.  My contender with Bower barrels and several of my heavy ruger revolvers.

Would that be good eating?

They can be, but fall bears usually aren't. It's their diet that can foul their flesh. Too many times they eat "leftovers" from the beach or river which makes them unfit to eat. Spring bears are a better bet. Brown bear isn't bad eating at all when it isn't fouled by their recent diet. Of course, it also helps if your not trying to eat a big old boar, the commonly harvested trophy animal.

Were the sights modified from the original configuration?  Any idea of the zero used?  With Mr. Linebaugh's skill, a 100+ yard zero wouldn't be too close (also zeroed at 9 yards).  My ballistic research from Real Guns shows only 4 inches high at 60 yards for an 18 inch drop at 170 yards, 106 yard zero, using 400 grain Hornady XTP at 1100 fps as an example.  I carried my 4" S&W .44 Mag Mountain Gun for brown bear last Spring, with Garret 325 grain hard cast bullets.  Of course, I did have my .416 Taylor for "backup"!  This bear hunt was way too cool!  Congratulations!

I tell you all what,  I am so very impressed with Dustins feat of marksmanship I bought me a genuine Linebaugh Bisley Vaquero in 500.  Now to find me a grizzler!
