T/C Renegade 54 cal.
« on: October 01, 2006, 04:36:26 PM »
Just pick up a T/C Renegade in 54 cal. would like to start out with patched ball.
Need a decent starting point for a load.
Ball diamenter , patch thicknes etc. I will go to the gun shop tomorrow but they pretty much sell what they got. Just trying to save a bit of time. The gun I bought used. Went to clean it up and found the nipple hole completly plugged. Managed to pull two woven strands if steel from the hole. Some wisegut must have been trying to clean it out and it broke off. also was sealed with wax. Maybe this was this guys way of storage. all is well now. Double set triggers seem pretty sweet. will be using 777 FFG does thi sload need to be reduced by 15 percent like in my cap & ball. would imagine yes.

Nipples are cheap, and easy to replace. Everybody ought to do it now and then. 777 is a bit harder to ignite so a Red Hot or Hot Shot nipple might give more reliable ignition. Or CCI's magnum caps might do the job as well.
I don't see any reason not to try a 530 round ball with a .015" or .018 patch. 60 grains ought to be a good charge weight to start with, and work up 5 grains at a time. Don't be too suprised if you don't need hundreds of grains of powder.  ;)

Around 65-70 gr. 777 with a lubed .015 smooth cotton patch. Depending on bore diameter variances, you may need an .020 patch or 75 gr. 777. Use either a real thin layer of Wonderlube 1000 or spit for lube -- even try some TC-13  for lube.
