take note of the distance he shot it with using an open sighted revolver and a vaquero at that. Hes a hell of a shot and a hell of a gun builder and a hell of a nice guy. http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/smf/index.php/topic,99776.0.html

Also take note of the fact the load he used was basically just a .480 Ruger level load. That is all a fellow really needs, those big fat bullets moving at moderate velocity like that are plenty and hyper velocity isn't needed.

Very cool!

Great to see a guy who builds them with a real knowledge of how to get the most out of them.

Is Mr. Linebaugh related to John Linebaugh?

I'm sure Mr. Linebaughs' shooting is great but 176 yrds with a revolver. i think someone misunderstood what he  may have been saying. He said "so I put two more broad side shots on him with my pistol." I may be wrong. I sure would like to see it. Not saying his revolver is not capable or the load. If i'm wrong please forgive me.

handi243:  176 yds with an open sighted pistol - absolutely possible and done all the time at the 200 yd handgun silhouette ranges.  And a bear that size is a lot bigger target than those skinny turkeys at 150 yds and those teeny, tiny little rams at 200 yds.  Even I have knocked over the ram at 200 yds with a 4" revolver.  It's a hoot, ya oughta try it.  It's a lot of fun and great practice.  JMHO.  Mikey.

Who among us would not administer a follow up shot or two to quickly and humanely end a hunt.  I believe he said the first round penetrated from the front through the chest and broke the spine.  Sounds like a good clean shot with plenty of penetration to me.  I for one would be willing to give Dustin Linebaugh the benefit of the doubt as to whether or not he was up to the shot or just lucky.

I was not saying it could not happen maybe i should have made my question alittle more clear. The way i read it he may have used a rifle for the first shot a finish the bear with his revolver. Please forgive me.

Dustin is John's son.  A heck of a gunsmith in his own right.

He built my carry gun for me:

His father built my hunting gun, but Dustin did the grips:

thats a good point Bill. IVe said it for years that the .480 is one of the most underated rounds out there. If you knew Dustin youd know that this was far from a stunt shot. The boy can SHOOT!

thanks loyd for the pix. congrats to dustin and tom. what a neat way to take a bear! there is nothing quite like taking game with a small packable revolver. leave the rifles at home and have fun! i encourage you alll to try it if you havent already. its a blast.
dustin is familiar with his gun and that is what makes success possible. i have watched him shoot and he is good but he also knows his gun and what its capable of. no doubt he was in complete control.
does any one know if jerry got a bear too? dustin says 3 bears were taken i think.

An excellent demonstration of someone who is a practiced shooter firing at a distance he was comfortable with at a target that was matched to the ammo, gun and shooter. Three sgots to kill a grizzley that I wouldn't shoot at with any of my handguns at any range. It is of prime importance to recognize and stay within your own limits. His limits are far beyond mine. I might be capable of shooting a target at that range with that gun with a bit of practice I would never shoot a grizzley at that range with it. My limits - not anyone elses. Those metal rams have never charged me and I was using a 357 magnum.
I offer my congratulations.

Are these grips ivory? I've been to the East and would be interested in some like this for a S&W? I can remember one of Elmers' guns, so stocked.

That's ivory on my carry gun,  but ivory micarta on the .500.  Just a little too much recoil for ivory grips on that one.

I know Dustin and John well.  If Dustin said it was that far, I KNOW it was that far.

He is a heck of a shot.  I have shot with him on several occasions.  No brag about him, he is as modest a man as you will find.
