45 LC load ?
« on: October 02, 2006, 02:10:43 AM »
I just picked up a 45/410 - 10" barrel.  I reload 45s for cowboy action shooting ( lots of fun ) but these loads don't do well in the contender.  What are some of you guys using ?  I would like to find a accurate deer hunting load. I'm very happy with the 410 side of this barrel. Thanks for the help !

With my 45/410  14" barrel the 45 LC rounds go all over the place at 100 yds so I contacted Thompson Center about this and they told me that the 45 LC rounds are only accurate to 15 feet. So I gave up on long shots with this barrel using 45 LC.

The 410 shotgun shoots a tight group using the choke.

No easy way around this one. I also have the 45/410 but just went out and bought a dedicated 45 colt barrel with a proper chamber. There are those on this forum who have had success using longer brass (444 Marlin/410 brass shotgun hulls/9.3x74R metric brass) and have developed loads to make this barrel shoot. If the search engine wasn't broken I could have found it for you.

I use the 9.3x74R case to bring the .45 bullet up close to the rifling in the .45/410 barrel. It works very well, with excellent accuracy.

I've also used the .444 case, but it is shorter, and the rims sometime slip under the ejector after firing. I use the brass .410 cases for shot.

This is one of the most versatile weapons ever designed, and I doubt it can be surpassed in a survival-type scenario.

Thanks guys,  I was getting about a 6" group at 25 yrds. with my cowboy loads.  I didn't think that was very good.  I would not hunt with it.  Sounds like you have to work at it to get these barrels to shoot good. I tried using the search feature also and it kept bringing me back to the home page.  I thought I might get an idea on what to buy for loading this barrel.

Maybe my barrel is just weird, but I get decent groups from my 14" 45 LC/.410.  I only likes the full throttle 300 grainer loads though.  I think I could put a whitetail down at 50 yards with mine.

Sandy,
My barrel will keep Federal 225 gr. HP lead factory loads inside 2- 2.5 in. at 25 yds.

Ok guys,  Thanks for the info.  This place never fails to come through.  Going out and get some factory ammo and see if it likes any. Then work a load up from there.  ;)
