7-30 Waters brass
« on: October 03, 2006, 09:03:24 AM »
I was going to post this in the Reloading forum, but since most 7-30 waters shooters use a Contender, I though that I would get more help here.

I have a small supply of brass, but I haven't been able to find any more anywhere. Does anyone know of a source for 7-30 brass?

I have never fire-formed brass, and i assume that you can form waters brass form 30-30 brass? Do I just run it through the 7-30 sizing die? Do I trim before or after I size it? Am I completely off track here? Please set me straight. I love my contender and want to continue to use it.

Federal makes brass for a 7-30 Waters, and also produces ammunition which works pretty well.  Good luck.

I have used the factory ammo from federal, that is where my current brass supply came from. However, I like the Hornady sst's more and have a good load worked up for it. Plus, the only place that I can find the federal ammo is on line for 20 bucks a box plus shipping. I have not found any federal brass anywhere.

Making 7-30 Waters brass from 30-30 brass is very simple and often the fireforming loads are accurate enough to use as formed loads. My choice would be to use unfired 30-30 brass but I have used once fired with no problems. If you would like pm me and I will respond with details.

Look to the bottom left corner of any post. You'll see a blue dot, that's to look at a member's profile, next is an envelope to e-mail them and then the next button is the PM button. IT says PM on it but that's not so easy to see. Some members have more than those three but all have those.

The brass is twice as expensive as the 30-30 brass, but you can make 7-30 brass from 375 Winchester brass. And then turn the necks to get the correct thickness. When using the 375 brass, if you size properly, and neck turn, there's no need to fireform, just load and shoot.

Good luck, it's a great cartridge.

HL beat me to it.
My first loading of 7-30 was with 30-30 brass ( used, I was more broke then than now)
If you are or have not been into reloading for widcat cal before, this is a good one to start with.
Just do a little reading on neck turning and the forming process in general and take it easy and slow.
I started buying my contender barrells that had to be loaded for and you could not buy factory ammo for because, of the 7-30. It was my first wildcat ,as factory was not avail back then.
Good luck and keep us informed

MWells,

I started fireforming 30-30 brass nearly 20 years ago and to this day, I don’t own a piece of brass with a headstamp that says 7-30 Waters!

30-30 brass is so dang cheap, as a matter of fact, I pick-up hundreds of pieces of it every years just before our deer seasons open.  The shooting ranges are full of it lying all over the place!

Just take a lubed 30-30 case and run it into a 7-30 Waters die until you get the neck area of the 30-30 started to size down to 7-30 Waters size.  Try to put it into the chamber and see if the action will close.  If not, set the sizing die down a bit more.  Keep doing this until it will chamber with just a bit of resistance.  I do it without the neck expander in place so as to not overwork the neck during various sizing attemps.  The new shoulder you have formed will hold the case in place when it is fired.  This helps eliminate excessive headspace.  I started using a starting load of H-335 and a 120 grain bullet.  No problems at all.

I wouldn’t even think of buying 7-30 Waters brass or 375 brass at all—too much $$$$$.

It is a truly fine cartridge.  I shoot predominately cast from my Contender and it is very, very accurate out to 300 yards.  Good-luck…BCB

thanks BCB.......pretty much what I was sending. .375 Win brass is expensive and oft times hard to find. I haven't found it to be worth the cost vs. 30-30 brass I can get anywhere.
My only 'correctly headstamped brass" I have came from the intial purchase of the barrel many years ago.

This sounds awefully familiar.  Did you plagarize one of my prior posts?    ;D
Ditto on .30-30 and in my guns, I did not have to do any neck turning.
Get a good deburring chamfer on inside and bullets seat fine.

Enjoy the 7x30.  It is a keeper.

Try E. Arthur Brown in Alexandria, Minnesota.   $30/100
https://www.eabco.com/brass01.html

They did a trigger job on my G2 and it turned out great.  $50 for the trigger job & $11.00 shipping, handling, taxes, etc.

Sorry Hawkeye - Beikirch ran out of 7-30 Federal brass last May (06) and Federal hasn't made any for about eight or nine years. If you know of any other place to find new Federal brass, please let me know.

The only other headstamptd 7-30 is currently made by Quality Cartridge --- if you want to pay $27. for TWENTY cases!!!

For that price you could buy new, loaded Federal ammo and pull the bullets and reload with your own pointy bullets. I believe you can even use Federal's powder and primer if you stick with a 120 grain bullet.

I think it's worth metioning one more time, if you make your own from 30-30 brass, just because it's rimmed, it does NOT headspace on the rim. If you do. you will stretch the case the first time you shoot it and cut way back on the number of reloads you'll get.

Thanks. I did not realize that EABco sold brass. That will probably be the route that I go when I need a new supply. Right now I am set. But if I was going to fire form, I wanted to start collecting brass.

By the way, did I mention that I really like the contender and the 7-30 caliber? So far this season, I have grabbed it more than any other gun, and it did not miss a single trip to the range. It is just a lot of fun to shoot.
