Looks like the AK-47 came out #1.  The M16 #2.  And one of my favorite rifles of mine, the K98 came in at #6.  The Mosin Nagants didn't make the top 10.  Of course everyone will have their own opinion of the top 10 I guess.   :)

I can sure understand the AK being number one, but number two sucks as a combat gun.  I guess the reason it rated so high is because so many were made and distributed to several other countries.  It didn't take long in Vietnam for the troops to figure out that it was a very ineffective combat weapon, and it does not appeal to the combat troops in Iraq where it has proven to less effective than in Nam.

The little black gun was OK when the enemy was in the open, but the slightest bit of cover and it was garbage.  During my first tour in Nam many of us traded the M16 for an AK.  The second tour that was the first thing I did, turned the M16 in to the armory, and picked up a battlefield AK.  I still remember a young shave tail asking about the AK, "where do you get ammo for the gun?"  I told him the VC carried the ammo for me, just take it off a dead commie.  He thought I was crazy, but after a few months in the field he picked up one for himself.

The criteria they set was really screwed up!
The G3 and its Variants Didn't even place?
The 1863 Springfield Rifle and its variants Changed the way
Wars were fought? It was a battle rifle !
The 8mm Lebel brought the world into the age of modern weapons
for the infantry soldier. One of the criteria should have been the weapons
impact on civilization ! Maybe they should come out with a show
on the top ten rifles that changed the world as we know it.

Did the FAL or Garand make the cut? I kinda think they should have.

I guess there were no Finns or Ruskies on the panel who did the selection. The Mosin would have been up there if there had been...

I hope the SMLE was near the top of the pile.  I think the M-16 should have been #1.  The AK is ok for close up but it sucks at long range.

The M-16a2 also stinks at long range.
Sure you may hit your target, But that little 55-62 grain
Projectile  just does not have the killing power it needs.
This is why so many M-14's are back in service now in Afghanistan.
That weapon allows the soldier to not only hit the enemy but kill
them to boot! Not Opinion on this one, Proven facts.
The .223 round is ok in Urban Combat, But it really stinks in the
Mountains! In all fairness though, that Big ol' M-14 is not the best
choice for urban combat!! Unwieldy in tight places.

I better let my buddies that are shooting 600 yard matches know that.

I think that comment was directed towards the killing power of the round, not accuracy.
