Well Ive been looking at some guns. Im trying to decide between a .223 and one of the shotguns. I was wondering how you guys liked your .223s from these guys? Im not sure if I want a bull barrel or a regular one. I want a pretty accurate rifle,.. but I don't want it to be to heavy to carry while out hunting. They are listed as the same weight on the website.

What do yall think? Are yall pretty happy with yours?

First off, I like your name. I have a sporter barrel .223 & after polishing the chamber with flitz I like it very much. It will shoot about anything at an inch & white box winnies from 1/2 to 3/4 @ 100 yds. no problem. Thats the 45 grainers.
Not afraid of any groundhog at 250 yards. Have a 5x15 Bushnell Legend on it & performs very well.
You'll like it. Had factory work on trigger when I ordered muzzle loader, .44 mag & turkey barrel. Very handi rifle indeed.

When the Search feature gets fixed you will find many many happy 223 Handi owners. Myself included.
I have both standard and 24"Bull barrels. The standard shoots very good, almost as good as the Ultra barrel. It's actually pretty light and as of course the name says it all, handi

Pick one up, give it a good polish, and grab a box of WWB 45gr JHP and you'll be happy. It's one of the more accurate calibers to have in a Handi.

Has anyone ever wondered why the .223 is probably the most accurate Handi caliber made? How about less backthrust on the breech face therefore allowing less "flex" at the most critical point of the rifle. The 30-30 is quite accurate also, however when going to the larger bullets such as in the .357, 44 Mag, and 45-70 the accuracy is not quite as good even tho these are also considered low pressure calibers. The larger bullet sizes account for a bit more backthrust and I think this hinders the accuracy on these rounds. Granted all of the above mentioned calibers are well capable of producing MOA groups when in the hands of a seasoned shooter, but the .223 and 30-30 are known to produce sub-MOA quite regularly. Also the 22 Hornet is a real perfomer, probably for the same reasons as the .223 and 30-30, I just don't much care for that round so I didn't actually consider it in the analysis until the end here.

I got my .223 Ultra about three years ago, and it's a great rifle; 1/2 - 3/4" with most loads. I'm working up some 40gr V-Max with H335, and got as small as .33"! But even with factory ammo, they're really accurate. The bull barrel is heavy, but since they're about 4-5" shorter overall than say, a bolt-action, they're lighter to carry than you might think. If you're looking for benchrest accuracy, though, you're only going to get so far with a handi - you have to pick it up off the rests between shots, so you'll never set it down in the exact same spot each time, and that will limit the most accurate shooters. But for most of us mortals out there, it'll do the job in the field and anywhere else you want to shoot. You won't be disappointed!

Yep a happy ultra .223 owner here to. No problem getting 1/2 inch groups and a couple of my buddies have just bought handi rifles for varmints in the last year. One has a .223 ultra and the other a .22 hornet both are good shooters and so are the rifles

I love mine, bull bbl is a little heavy but not bad. It shoots great with BH moly 52gr HP and as with everyone else's 45gr WWB.

Stillborn, Thumbs up for the .223 heavy barrel and wwb45 grain hollow points. Just ask the ground hogs how good it shoots, oh well they can't answer! Have 3 and all are shooters. The gun was good from day one, took me a while to change from bench shooting to feild hunting, it'a a different ball game out there. Did a trigger job after a few momths on all 3 good improvement. If you don't want to tackel the trigger work just give it a bore polish and break in she will shoot fine.

I bought a 223 barrel off of darat100 a couple weeks ago,great shooter.I'm getting half inch groups with 50gr v-max in handloads.He shot the whit box winchester loads and was happy.I like the standard barrel for packing around,but as AZ223 says,with them being shorter overall length I don't think the bull barrel would be too bad.By all means give one a try,if you don't like it you can always sell the barrel and get another.I'm very happy with mine.

And seriously, you can be the most demanding shooter, and they deliver! Mine is the 223 in 1-14 twist, the old style, and it shoots all kinds of factory into 3/4 inch!

From the first 223 Remington barrels on the old Topper frames until the latest change to 1:9, they were 1:12 barrels.

Thanks for all the replies guys! Im sure that I will end up getting both a rifle and a shotty. Now Im just trying to figure out which to get first! I don't have a shotgun yet, so I may end up getting that first... but Im having a hard time picking one out!!

I hadn't thought about it until now, but my sons first gun was a handy in 20 ga, I had to cut the stock. Then latyer in his teen yrs he bought a 45-410 survivor which he still has. I have a 223 ultra which I love. And I just purchased a 45-70 which I'll pick up on Thursday. Oh , by the way , I kept the piece of stock for the 20 gage and when he was big enough screwed and glued it back on, we still have that one too. These handys just sneak up on you, and they are very patient, but once you buy one .they got you.

Here is a pic of my Buffalo Classic in 45/70
I also have a Handi in .223
and a 20ga pardner
and an old 410
and by the end of the month ill have another in .243

i dont have pics of the others cause theyr all at home besides my .223. but its at the PD right now, but i will get a pic of it soon too and post it.

I love all of my handis and wouldnt trade them for the world!

Dang, that looks cold. It probably sounds funny to you, but I hope we get some snow this winter.
